MANILA (UPDATED) — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday said that two people were reported dead as tropical storm Enteng battered the country.

The NDRRMC said in its Monday morning bulletin that at least two people were reportedly killed by landslides in Central Visayas due to the effects of the storm while 10 were injured in the same region.

The fatalities were reported in Barangay Punta Princesa and Barangay San Jose in Cebu City, according to Col. Jean Fajardo, spokesperson for the Philippine National Police.

The toll is expected to rise as casualty reports come in. However, these numbers are subject to verification and updates and may change.

In an interview with ANC on Monday afternoon, NDRRMC director and spokesperson Edgar Posadas said 3 alleged casualties in Bicol region and 8 in Calabarzon are now being verified.

Tropical storm Enteng, located off Casiguran, Aurora at 1 p.m., is bringing heavy rains and fierce winds over large parts of Luzon and Visayas, prompting severe flooding and landslides.

The bad weather also led to the cancellation of sea and air trips as well as government work and classes.

The heavy rains dumped by the storm also swelled the Marikina River, prompting some residents to evacuate.

The disaster response agency reported that 63 individuals in Central Visayas have been affected by the cyclone so far, with 43 of them staying in evacuation shelters. At least 10 houses were also damaged in the region, the NDRRMC said.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,413 people were stuck at ports nationwide early Monday, the Philippine Coast Guard said.

Social Welfare spokesperson Irene Dumlao told ANC on Monday that the department has prepositioned more than P970 million worth of family food packs and non-food items with local government units nationwide.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also assured the public that the government is monitoring the weather situation, adding that preparations are in place to help Filipinos affected by the storm.

PNP ON ALERT

The PNP is now on heightened alert for the effects of tropical storm Enteng, according to PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil.

More than 5,000 police officers were deployed to Regions 4A and 5, focusing on providing humanitarian assistance and disaster response to those affected by the storm.

The PNP Women and Children Protection Center has been deployed to evacuation centers to ensure that children and women are well taken care of, Fajardo said.

She pointed out that evacuation centers can become overcrowded, saying they want to ensure no untoward incidents involving women and children occur. —with a report from Raya Capulong, ABS-CBN News
