MANILA (UPDATED) -- Socorro Bayanihan Services Inc (SBSI) Vice President Mamerto Galanida died Saturday morning, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said. He was 82 years old.

The NBI said Galanida complained of several physical ailments until the court granted his appeal for hospital arrest last week, and was transferred to a medical facility in Paranaque City.

He died from several medical complications and old age.

Galanida was accused of orchestrating several illegal activities in SBSI according to former members and victims, which include human trafficking, forced marriages, and rape, among others.

In a privilege speech in September 2023, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said Galanida allegedly groomed Jey Rence Quilario, also called "Senior Agila," to be the next "Messiah" and "new Jesus."

Galanida and Quilario have repeatedly denied these allegations.

A month later, the NBI arrested the SBSI leaders including Galanida after warrants of arrest were issued, stemming from 21 criminal charges filed against them.

Galanida and other SBSI leaders have been in the custody of the NBI.

No bail was recommended for the release of Galanida, Quilario and the others.

He served as a three-term municipal mayor of Socorro and a provincial board member of Surigao del Norte.
