MANILA - Typhoon Paeng (international name Trami), will bring more rain to northern Luzon, which is still reeling from the onslaught of typhoon Ompong, state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday night.

The state weather bureau, in its latest advisory 11 p.m. Monday, said the typhoon's rainbands may be felt by Friday in northern Luzon.

PAGASA said tropical cyclone warning signals may be raised over extreme northern Luzon as early as Thursday, September 27.

Paeng was last spotted 795 km east of Basco, Batanes as of 10 p.m. Monday, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 225 kph.

A state of calamity was raised over several areas in northern Luzon earlier this month due to the damage left behind by Ompong.

The total damage caused by typhoon Ompong to crops and livestock has reached P26.7 billion, smashing initial forecasts, according to the latest data of the Department of Agriculture (DA) released Monday.

Heavy rains caused by Ompong also triggered landslides in Benguet and Cebu provinces, leaving more than 120 people dead and dozens missing.

SUPER TYPHOON

The Hawaii-based US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on Monday raised the status of Paeng to a super typhoon, with sustained winds of 240 kph and gusts of up to 296 kph.

Paeng is expected to reach peak intensity in 24 hours, with sustained winds of up to 268 kph and gusts of up to 324 kph.

JTWC has higher numbers because of its 1-minute mean measurements compared to PAGASA's 10-minute average readings.
