MANILA — During the final stop of K-pop group ENHYPEN’s “Fate” tour in the Philippines, member Jay could not help but be sentimental over the past months, which saw the seven-piece act perform across Asia and the United States.

“It’s been six months since we started our ‘Fate’ tour. When I think about a six-month period of time, we can say it’s a long time, but now that I’m looking back, from Seoul to the Philippines, time actually moved so fast,” Jay said through an interpreter.

“We still have our encore concerts in Seoul but ‘Fate’ tour’s official last stop is in the Philippines. Thank you so much because the ‘Fate’ tour is ending with all of you ENGENEs,” he told throngs of fans that filled the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Tarlac on Saturday.

“We’re so happy that we saved the best for last,” said Jake. “I think we’re ending the ‘Fate’ tour with such an amazing audience with amazing people.”

One would truly find Filipino ENGENEs commendable as many of them overcame long distances just to reach the stadium — typically a two-hour drive from Manila if there’s no traffic — and witness Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo and Niki play at a bigger venue compared to the one from their previous visit. Surprisingly, during the concert, the venue’s vicinity remained packed with people, apparently listening from the outside.

The Philippine stop of ENHYPEN’s “Fate” tour, organized by PULP Live World, comes exactly a year since the group played three days at the Mall of Asia Arena for its previous “Manifesto” tour. It also marked the first time that the Tarlac stadium hosted a concert.

Listening to the cheers throughout the three-hour show, one could easily forget that a vast majority of the audience waited outside the stadium for hours prior to showtime.

Enduring the heat, fans kept themselves busy with various activities at the “ENtertainment Zone” set up beside the venue, including booths for fan-made merchandise giveaways, standees of the members for photo opportunities and even amusement park rides such as a Ferris wheel.

Performances

When the clock struck 7, ENGENEs let out deafening and frenzied screams as the septet, decked in white and gold, took the stage and opened the evening with the thrilling “Drunk-Dazed.” Beams of green laser then cut through the red-drenched stage as the boys showed off forceful moves in a dance intermission before cranking up the decibels again with “Blockbuster.”

ENHYPEN’s discography draws from a variety of genres and sounds, and it was evident in the “Fate” concert. Pairing these songs with dance routines, striking background videos, bursts of confetti and other stage gimmicks, concertgoers were treated to a visual and sonic spectacle.

Among the songs performed were the reggae-esque “Let Me In (20 CUBE)” from the group’s debut extended play, the subdued yet alluring “Fever,” and hip-hop-leaning singles “Future Perfect (Pass the MIC)” and “Blessed-Cursed.”

Channeling their inner rock stars, the boys dished out “Attention, please!” and the anthemic “Shout Out” — the latter an undeniable highlight of the concert as virtually the entire audience sang along.

There were, of course, calmer moments, especially when the group split into units. Jay played the guitar while singing “TFW (That Feeling When)” with Jake, Sunoo and Sunghoon while Heeseung showed off his piano skills in “Just A Little Bit” with Jungwon and Niki.

During the viral hit “Polaroid Love,” the members boarded carts that circled the stadium, allowing them to closely interact with more fans. They rode the carts again to say goodbye during the encore, which also featured a stunning fireworks display.

Dressed in black suits with tinges of red, K-pop’s dimension-hopping vampires also performed their more recent singles “Sweet Venom” and “Bite Me.”

‘The Philippines I’ll remember’

The concert also allowed for intimate interactions between the artists and fans. At one point, for instance, the audience raised orange flowers inspired by one of the group’s songs, to which Jay remarked: “This is the Philippines I’ll remember.”

Later, Sunghoon noted how “ENGENEs prepared a lot of events for us” after fans surprised Jungwon with twinkling blue flowers for his upcoming birthday.

Sunoo serenaded his Filipino fans with “Moving Closer” by local band 'Never the Strangers,' while Heeseung impressed with his cover of Zack Tabudlo’s “Give Me Your Forever.” Sunghoon, meanwhile, gave his own take on SB19’s “Gento” dance challenge.

Several Pikachu mascots also filled the stage when the group sang “One and Only,” a collaboration single with Pokémon.

Fated to meet

Near the end of the concert, the group thanked fans for their continued support. “I’m very happy because we can end our second world tour with so many ENGENEs here in the Philippines,” Sunoo said.

“The more time passes, the more I'm starting to believe that ENGENE and ENHYPEN, meeting each other out of literally billions of people, was fate,” Sunghoon said, referencing the tour’s title.

“So we can't know for certain where our fate will take us but one thing’s for sure: we will all be happy as long as we are with ENGENE,” he added.

Jake, meanwhile, said he hoped fans were “able to be happy and get through tough times… because of us. That makes us happy.”

The boys also promised to return. “We will try our best to give our all to be back here in the stadium and in many more stadiums,” Sunghoon said.
