Medina is the country's hope to succeed Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015. The coronation night will be on January 30 at Mall of Asia Arena — the first time the pageant will be held here since 1994.

Medina's bid also made headlines when Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe 1969, said that she has a "one in a million" chance to win the crown. Diaz later explained her opinion does not imply that Medina does not deserve the title, but that it has to do with the fact that she is the local bet.
