MANILA—The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Saturday rolled out the first train of Chinese company Dalian for the MRT-3.

In a Facebook Live video, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and other officials rode the train, which was made up of 3 cars.

The 48 Dalian trains, purchased for P3.8 billion, had not yet been used due to questions over its compatibility with the MRT tracks.

The MRT has come under fire for long passenger queues and a chronic breakdown of its trains, forcing many passengers to disembark and walk on the tracks.

As of 5 p.m. Saturday, the MRT has 15 operational trains, 12 of which are running.

Economic managers in August approved the rehabilitation of the railway, which is expected to double the number of operational trains by 2022.
