MANILA — A pedicab belonging to scrap collector Jaime Abaya got stuck on Tanay-Pililia Road in Rizal after a tree fell due to strong winds brought by severe tropical storm Kristine on Thursday.

(It was parked there after we collected bottles... I didn't expect it to fall just because of the strong wind... one of the tires got stuck, and we couldn't get it out.)

Barangay officials quickly responded and removed the fallen tree, which caused traffic delays for passing motorists.

According to officials of Barangay Plaza Aldea in Tanay, Rizal, strong winds have been affecting the area.

(When the wind is that strong, with many trees here that are almost not properly rooted... when the wind is as strong as earlier, many are affected.)

In Pililia, six sitios in Barangay Hulo have been without power since early morning due to a fuse explosion and bamboo branches that were blown onto power lines.

(At around three in the early morning, a fuse blew, and some wires were hit by bamboo... also due to the strong winds.)

Meanwhile, in Pililia’s farming areas, some residents' livelihoods have been impacted. Lolita Jimena’s rice fields were flooded by rainwater, damaging the crops.

(Last night, the water level was high, and it swept the crops away with it... It's a big loss because the bottom part will rot... The capital for that was borrowed.)

The province remained under Signal No. 2 Thursday, with intermittent rains and strong winds especially affecting the eastern areas such as Tanay, Pililia, Jala-Jala, and Morong.

According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), major roads like Marcos Highway and Sumulong Highway remain passable with no flooding reported.

As of 9:00 a.m., 318 families, or over 1,104 individuals, have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The PDRRMO is running 24-hour operations, with evacuation centers open and personnel on standby for rescue operations if needed.
