MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Tuesday ordered a study for the possible creation of a legal department within the Philippine National Police (PNP) that will serve as defense council for police officers facing complaints.

He made the instruction during the second command conference in Camp Crame where he highlighted the need to provide legal assistance to cops, especially those who cannot afford the service of a lawyer.

“We’ll create an office, the legal office within the PNP who will be the defense council of any policeman who is charged with whatever complaint, crime. Mayroon at mayroon silang tatakbuhan kaagad na abogado just to give them advice and it will be internal, so hindi na sila magbayad,” Marcos said.

“We have to provide that kind of protection para naman ‘yung mga pulis natin, malakas ang loob na gawin ‘yung trabaho nila. Kahit tama ‘yung ginagawa nila, hina-harass sila,” he added.

Marcos said this would protect police officers against harassment, given instances when these complaints were alllegedly "weaponized" by criminals.

“Kakasuhan sila ng kung ano-ano, some of them are powerful figures. So, syempre, marami silang capability, maraming resources, maraming pera. Marami silang access sa mga sikat na abogado, kailangan mayroon din tayong pang depensa. Yes, we have to protect our people,” he said.

The chief executive said the government cannot ignore the welfare of police officers as he recognized their dedication to the service.

During the command conference, Marcos also discussed with the PNP their operational accomplishments and compliance to his directives, among others.
