DAVAO CITY (UPDATED) -- Former President Rodrigo Duterte is running for mayor of Davao City in the 2025 elections, with his son, incumbent mayor Sebastian Duterte, as his running mate.

An hour before the cut-off of the filing of certificates of candidacy on Monday, Duterte arrived at the Commission on Elections Davao District office to submit his COC.

Duterte earlier disclosed that he will be running for the local elections in Davao City, even asking the media during the press conference on what position he will run for.

"I am open to suggestions from the media. What do you think I should be gunning for? Mayor tayo," he said in Davao City on Saturday.

Many supporters greeted Duterte when he arrived in Magsaysay Park, where the local Comelec office is located. Some of the candidates of the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, a political party he founded, supported the Dutertes as they filed their COC.

"Gusto kong magsilbi sa inyo. Davao is better than yesterday," he said.

Incumbent Davao City mayor Sebastian Duterte will be his running mate, taking the position of vice mayoral candidate.

"Paminaw nako nga naa pa gyud siyay mahatag nga wisdom sa mga tawo. His form of governance kay very rare, effective gyud kaayo," the younger Duterte said.

(I think that he still has the wisdom to impart to people. His form of governance is very rare and very effective.)

Aside from Paolo Duterte, who earlier sought re-election as Davao City's first district representative, his son, Brgy. Buhangin Proper chairman Omar Duterte, will also run as the representative for the city's second district.

Sebastian said that they have changed their lineup many times, but he assured that this will be the final lineup of the Duterte family in the 2025 midterm elections.

"Actually, over the past few days, daghan man kaayo og changes man gud, but mao na ning final na gyud nako nga naisip nako sa tan-aw nako maayo, kumportable ra, sakto ra," he said.

(Actually, over the past few days, there have been a lot of changes, but this is the final one that I thought is good and just right.)

The Duterte patriarch has been included in several surveys as one of the top 8 senatorial preferences; however, he said he may not be able to handle the strenuous national campaign if he runs for Senator.

Duterte served as mayor of Davao City for many years before he was elected president in 2016.
