(UPDATED) Former President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to run again for a government post.

This time, he wants to return as mayor of Davao City, a post he held for several years before becoming Philippine president in 2016.

Duterte also confirmed he will run possibly in tandem with his son, incumbent mayor Sebastian Duterte. 

Duterte said that he cannot pursue a national campaign due to his age, amid calls for him to run for senator in the 2025 midterm elections. 

His daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, earlier said that the elder Duterte together with Sebastian and Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte will run for seats in the Senate.

But Duterte himself denied this, saying that Sara was only joking.

"Anong gagawin namin sa Senate...Anong gagawin namin doon?" he said.

He also claimed he is "not inclined" to return to politics, saying that he no longer has the political capital, nor the funds,  to reenter the political arena after his term ended in 2022.

"Hindi na ako babalik ng politika. Tapos na po ako. Laos na ako. Wala na akong panggastos, wala na lahat. Ang naiwan sa akin siguro yabang," Duterte said. - report from Hernel Tocmo, ABS-CBN News
