MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte possibly received information that the military might plot to oust him, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Tuesday, after the President earlier said the military was already "hot" on him.

Panelo said that under the Constitution, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are the "protectors of the people," and if the military was witnessing corruption or any kind of dishonesty in government, the military may act accordingly.

Duterte had reportedly warned that if the military gets "angry," a coup d'etat might take place.

Just last week the President appealed to the military not to remove him, saying he was open to having coffee with the military and police to talk about their concerns about government.

In response, the military said it was loyal to the flag and the constitution.

Duterte had stated multiple times he was ready to step down from his post if the military tells him it does not like his administration anymore.

The AFP and the Philippine National Police, meanwhile, denied there are plots of coup among their ranks.

Duterte earlier increased the pay of police and soldiers, citing how they put their lives on the line for duty. He has also appointed several retired military generals to key positions in his administration.

Rumors of a coup or ouster plot have been recurrent under his administration.
