MANILA - Pasig City is procuring some P1 million worth of bike racks aside from creating a special lane for bicycles, its mayor Vico Sotto said Sunday.

The city's transportation department earlier unveiled plans for a high priority bicycle corridor from Amang Rodriguez Avenue to F. Manalo and Caruncho.

"This is much more efficient than building parking spaces for cars... na sayang sa espasyo at sobrang mahal. One parking space for a bike is 100 times cheaper than a parking space for a car," Sotto told ABS-CBN's Teleradyo.

"We're encouraging companies, and we're drafting an ordinance through our transport department para i-require yung mas magandang parking, yung bike racks para sa mga bisikleta sa mga establisimyento," he said.

The city considered biking as essential transportation, and biking shops as essential businesses during Metro Manila's enhanced community quarantine which shut down public transportation, Sotto said.

"Nakita natin ngayong panahon ng community quarantine, tumaas talaga ang demand sa bisikleta dahil sa limitadong transportasyon... Napatunayan din nating pwedeng pwede ang bike to work sa Pilipinas," he said.

(We saw during this period of community quarantine that demand for bicycles increased due to limited transportation. We also proved that bike to work can be done in the Philippines.)

Pasig is currently building pop-up bike lanes in some parts the city, the mayor said.
