ABS-CBN News Digital wins 2 awards in SOPA 2019 for Boracay, Marawi special reports

ABS-CBN News Digital took home 2 awards at the Society of Publishers in Asia 2019 Awards for Editorial Excellence in Hong Kong on Wednesday for its special reports on the Marawi conflict and the Boracay rehabilitation.

ABS-CBN News Digital took home 2 awards at the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) 2019 Awards for Editorial Excellence in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

The multimedia special report on the Marawi siege, "Stories From Under the Rubble: Inside the Battle of Marawi," was given Honorable Mention in Journalistic Innovation, while the 2-part multimedia special report, "The Boracay Project," was also given Honorable Mention in Reporting on the Environment.

The special report on Marawi, written by Patrick Quintos, looks at the different facets of the 5-month siege of Marawi City, staged by Islamic State sympathizers in 2017.

It was developed for the web by Regie Francisco and published on the ABS-CBN News website, featuring photos from Jonathan Cellona and Fernando Sepe Jr., and drone videos from Val Cuenca and Gian Carlo Raman.

The multimedia report also won the Association for International Broadcasting Award in London in 2018.

The Marawi report was edited by Dominic Menor, Jojo Malig, and Isagani de Castro Jr.

The Boracay Project is an overview of the government's plan for Boracay island, the country's prime tourist destination ordered closed by President Rodrigo Duterte for 6 months in 2018.

The special report, penned by Katrina Domingo with photographs by Sepe and also developed for the web by Francisco, presented the different problems facing the island at the start of the closure, and assessed the work done 6 months later in Part 2 of the report reviewed the progress of the rehabilitation.

Both stories were produced by the multimedia team headed by Sepe and composed of graphic artist Pamela Ramos and photo editor Gigie Cruz.

The Boracay report was edited by Menor and De Castro.

This is the third straight year that ABS-CBN News has taken home an award from SOPA.

The special report, “War On Drugs: The Unheard Voiceswon in 2017, and another special report on the drug war, "Healing the wounds from the drug war" won in 2018.

Another Philippine news site, Rappler, took home 2 awards for its report on the drug war, “Some people need killing.”

GMA News Online was nominated for Excellence in Feature Writing.

Founded in 1982 to champion freedom of the press, SOPA is a not-for-profit organization based in Hong Kong, representing international, regional and local media companies across Asia.

It promotes excellence in journalism and endorses best practices for all local and regional publishing platforms in the Asia Pacific region, according to the organization.

The annual SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence serve as the world-class benchmark for quality journalism in the region, organizers said.
