MANILA - An ABS-CBN News report about the Marawi siege won the 2018 Association of International Broadcasting Awards in the interactive category.

The 9-part special report "Stories from under the rubble: Inside the battle of Marawi" bested other media outfits like BBC World Service, Radio New Zealand, Russia Today, and Radio Free Europe.

In 2017, the award was won by Al Jazeera's report "A Voyage to Antarctica."

The special report, written by Patrick Quintos, looks at the different facets of the 5-month siege of Marawi City, staged by Islamic State sympathizers in 2017.

It was developed for the web by Regie Francisco and published on the ABS-CBN News Digital website, featuring photos from Jonathan Cellona and Fernando Sepe Jr., and drone videos from Val Cuenca.

Danny Buenafe, head of ABS-CBN News in Europe, received the award for the Philippine-based news team in a ceremony held in London on Thursday.

The ABS-CBN News Channel's "Bandurria" episode from the documentary series "Local Legends" was also one of the finalists in the arts and culture category.

The AIB award went to Al Jazeera's entry "Sudan's forgotten films."

The AIB Media Awards was hosted by broadcast journalist Mark Barton, who is also a Bloomberg news anchor.

Now on its 14th year, the AIB awards honors excellence in factual video, audio, and interactive productions.
