MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte paid tribute Thursday to "unnamed heroes" in the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic as the Philippines marks Araw ng Kagitingan or the Day of Valor.

Aside from war veterans, Duterte said Filipinos can draw inspiration from COVID-19 health workers and frontliners "who despite great personal risk, continue to work so that we may all survive."

"As we face this unprecedented public health emergency that threatens the very survival of our society, let us all draw strength from the heroism of the veterans of Bataan and the unnamed heroes in the fight against COVID-19," the President said.

Among the "present-day heroes" cited by the President are medical professionals and health workers, military, police, and law enforcement personnel, firefighters, security guards, and frontliners in essential industries.

"May their example give us the courage and strength to endure this pandemic and rise as a stronger and more resilient nation," Duterte said.

The Philippines marks on Thursday the 78th Araw ng Kagitingan which honors Filipino and American soldiers who fought side by side in Bataan during World War II.

In light of the coronavirus threat, the government urged Filipinos to pay tribute to workers in the frontlines of the battle against the pandemic by applauding them daily at 5 p.m. until the end of the lockdown in Luzon on April 30.
