MANILA - The Philippines on Thursday will pay tribute to all of its workers on the frontlines of the battle against the coronavirus pandemic as the nation marks Araw ng Kagitingan or the Day of Valor.

Filipinos are asked to go to their doorsteps and applaud the country's "real-time" heroes every 5 p.m., starting on Thursday, and until the end of the lockdown in Luzon, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Wednesday.

The Cabinet official said the move is a "simple gesture of gratitude" to health workers, state troops, essential workers, government workers, media personnel, and all those still reporting to work so that the rest of the public can stay at home.

"Inaanyayahan po namin ang ating kababayan simula bukas...na tuwing alas-[5] ng hapon, pumunta po tayo sa mga pintuan at bintana at palakpakan natin ang mga bayani na nagtatrabaho sa ating mga frontlines," Nograles said in a virtual press briefing.

(Every day, beginning tomorrow, we urge our countrymen to go to their doorways or their windows to applaud all our heroes still working on the frontlines.)

Aside from applauding, Filipinos can also share videos paying tribute to frontliners on social media just to send "good vibes."

"Sa mga gusto ng mas modern na approach dito, pwede rin tayo mag share ng videos natin via Facebook, Instagram, o Tiktok tuwing alas-[5-] ng hapon," he said.

"Pwede tayo kumanta o sumayaw para sa ating frontliners para ipakita natin ang pagmamahal natin sa kanila, at mapadalhan natin ng 'good vibes' sa napaka-challenging na panahong ito," he added.

(We can sing or dance for our frontliners to show our love for them and send them good vibes in these challenging times.)

The Philippines on Thursday will mark the 78th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) which honors Filipino and American soldiers who fought side by side in Bataan during World War II.
