MANILA — Though not considered a holiday, April Fool’s Day is still one of the days that some Filipinos like to let loose a little, just after the solemn observance of Holy Week.

For those who celebrate it, April Fools' often involves playing practical jokes on the people around you and shouting “April Fools'!’” to declare the prank.

However, there are limits and lines that those participating in the predominantly American tradition should not cross.

JOKES ABOUT BREAKUPS/ CHEATING ON YOUR PARTNER

Sure, it may sound like an exciting way to test your partner under the guise of an April Fool’s prank, but playing with someone’s feelings for laughs is never right and could end with an actual breakup as a punchline.

PRANKS INVOLVING DEATHS, SELF- HARM OR MENTAL DISORDERS

Jokes about other people’s real-life struggles and traumas are rarely, if ever, funny and making light of what others may have to deal with in their daily lives trivializes their very real struggles.

PRANKS ON DELIVERY RIDERS

Making fake orders and canceling bookings can disrupt people’s livelihoods and could make them lose time and money to the inconvenience. High fuel prices and heavy traffic in Metro Manila make this kind of joke even less funny.

JOKES ABOUT COMING OUT

Although the LGBTQIA+ community has managed to carve out safe spaces and more visibility than in recent years, they are still subject to discrimination, stereotypes and unequal treatment in the Philippines.

This, and the fact that coming out is a very personal decision means using it as a basis for a prank is disrespectful of their struggles.

STUNTS AND JOKES THAT MAY CAUSE PUBLIC PANIC

Causing a stir in public that could lead to panic and mass hysteria should not be among your April Fools’ Day pranks.

Like bomb jokes, pranks like these can cause injury or worse and could make you liable for unintended consequences of the prank.

Whatever the plans are for the April Fools’ Day, one must remember that not to pose harm or to inflict serious pain on others.

Sensitivity, boundaries and empathy are the things to be observed if one doesn’t want to end up the fool on April 1st.

In line with this, the Department of Health has urged Filipinos to "be kind" and do no harm on April Fool's Day.

"The DOH urges all would-be pranksters to please avoid jokes related to illness, disease, and other physical or mental conditions; most especially about the loss of life. Doing so adds to stigma we want less of," the agency said in a statement on Sunday evening.
