MANILA -- Actress Maxene Magalona turned to social media on Thursday to emphasize that walking away from toxic relationships and traumatic marriages can heal one's soul, in light of the Mental Health Awareness month.

While Filipinos view marriage as a sacred sacrament so people do their best to make their commitments work, Magalona noted that some couples end up projecting unhealed wounds to each other, thereby turning a sacred union into a "toxic and traumatic bond."

"Marriage is supposed to be a sacred union between two people... However, because most humans have not done their individual work of healing their pain from their childhood, they get married with unprocessed wounds and end up projecting those wounds onto each other," she said in a lengthy post.

"What’s worse is that they think that having kids will solve everything. When the kids come, the problems are still there and they end up fighting in front of the children which leaves them traumatized and mentally damaged,"  she added.

The actress highlighted that this creates a "vicious cycle," affecting children until it gets into their future families.

Magalona said she empathizes with her fellow FIlipinos who are trapped in abusive marriages.

"Being forced to stay in a relationship that diminishes your self-worth will make you think less and less of yourself until you don’t know yourself anymore," the actress noted.

She also explained that divorce helps in saving the sanctity of marriage -- by dissolving toxic marriages and keeping sacred relationships intact.

"I sincerely pray for peace and progress for our nation. We deserve divorce," Magalona stressed.

Magalona has been vocal in being positive after her separation with husband Rob Mananquil in 2022.
