PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa approved the player trade between Kia and San Miguel Beer after the clubs submitted a third revision of the deal that still involves Kia's rights to the No. 1 pick in the upcoming rookie draft.

Kia will give up those rights in exchange for San Miguel’s Rashawn McCarthy, Jay-R Reyes, Ronald Tubid and its 2019 first-round pick, Narvasa said in a press conference ahead of Game 7 of the PBA Governors' Cup finals between Barangay Ginebra and Meralco.

It is widely believed that San Miguel will draft Filipino-German and Gilas Pilipinas mainstay Christian Standhardinger.

Based on the initial proposal submitted to the Office of the Commissioner, Kia was OK to give up its top overall pick for only Reyes, McCarthy and Keith Agovida.

It was later revised with San Miguel willing to ship veterans Yancy de Ocampo, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Gabby Espinas and McCarthy for the top pick.

Both proposals were turned down.

“Iyong first, I said hindi pepwede yan. Iyong second revision that we saw in the papers, I said, ‘No. You have to revise it and I will give you a time limit,' ” said Narvasa.

Even before it was finalized, the deal caused an uproar among fans when reports surfaced that Kia, a struggling franchise since its inclusion in the league in 2014, would surrender its chance to get a cornerstone player.

Narvasa said Kia told him that it also received several offers from other teams.

“They did not go to San Miguel and said 'I want it like this and I will give it to you.' Eventually after thinking about it, they ended up with San Miguel,” he said.

Narvasa apparently approved the deal only when the Beermen agreed to give up Tubid, an experienced shooting guard who has seen action for Shell, Air21 and Ginebra.

Tubid turned 36 years old on October 15, while Reyes is 33. McCarthy, drafted in the second round in 2016, hardly saw any action for the Beermen.

“(I told them) please consider also the sentiments of the fans. Mahal na mahal nila ang PBA, but they want also to see balanced team, they want go to a game na di nila alam kung sino ang mananalo,” said Narvasa.

The announcement came a week after the two teams drew negative reaction from fans and even team owners including Alaska’s Fred Uytengsu.
