BATANGAS CITY—Terrence Romeo scored 48 points and dazzled fans at Batangas City Sports Center with a number of fancy moves, as the Smart PBA All Stars used a methodical breakaway that began in the second quarter to beat Team Luzon 152-149 here on Friday.

Romeo's points total set a new record for an all-star game.

The TNT guard drew audible oohs and aahs inside the arena as he displayed his unparalleled shooting range.

He drilled a 28-footer, a corner 3 looking away a la Steph Curry and an and-1 play off a long 2 and foul by Calvin Abueva.

The Smart squad composed of Gilas Pilipinas players and coached by Yeng Guiao led by as many as 20 points, but Team Luzon made it a game behind Arwind Santos's timely hits from behind the arc.

Two triples by Santos made it 148-144 with 1:22 left in the game.

Back-to-back baskets by June Mar Fajardo put Smart up 152-144, but a tip-in by Japeth Aguilar and another 3 by Santos narrowed the deficit to 3 with 7 seconds left.

Luzon, handled by coach Leo Austria, had a chance to send the high-scoring game to overtime after an LA Tenorio steal off an inbounds play, but the Barangay Ginebra playmaker missed a wide-open 3 as time expired.

Two nights after a more star-studded Smart roster lost big to Team Mindanao, this short-handed version looked to be at a disadvantage given that only 8 players dressed up.

Alaska forward Carl Bryan Cruz and NLEX guard Kiefer Ravena were declared out prior to the game, and early on Blackwater swingman Allein Maliksi suffered an injury that forced him to sit out the game.

But Guiao credited Romeo, Fajardo and co. for playing with heart.

" 'Yun nga 'Magnificent 7' nga ang tawag ko sa natirang pito," Guiao said.

"Actually we didn't expect to win, to lead the game for the most part by 15 or so pero nagsumikap sila.

"Actually in a situation like this you have very little control. Wala ka namang actual preparation, sistemaing mai-put diyan. Wala kang game plan na pwedeng i-execute. It's really the desire of the players to win. I don't think I can take any credit for that."

Romeo, who took home the game's Most Valuable Player award, added 7 triples and 11 assists.

The previous all-star game scoring record was 44 set by James Yap and Dylan Ababou in Laoag City in 2012, according to league chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

Fajardo contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds for Smart, while Jio Jalalon finished with a triple-double of 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Aguilar led Luzon with 43 points and 15 rebounds, while Santos added 32 points and 6 3-pointers.
