Donnie Nietes is getting the biggest break of his decorated boxing career when he steps into the ring against a dangerous opponent in Inglewood, Calif., on Sunday morning (Manila time).

Nietes will defend his world flyweight crown against Argentina’s Juan Carlos Reveco in HBO’s “Super Fly 2” card, an opportunity for Nietes to gain the biggest media exposure of his career.

“He is finally receiving the exposure his career lacked and he has to cash in with an impressive performance against Juan Carlos Reveco,” fight commentator Ed Tolentino said.

But Nietes, the only Filipino to reign as champion for more than 10 years, has a formidable challenge in former 2-time champion Reveco.

“Reveco offers a real threat. He is a former world champion and is almost as seasoned as Nietes. Reveco is a boxer-pressure fighter,” Tolentino said.

Tolentino said Nietes needs to take a methodical approach against the Argentine, who has 39 wins against 3 losses.

“Reveco is small at 5-foot-2, and has the habit of lowering his guard, particularly when he is lunging in and trying to initiate a brawl. Nietes will have to be methodical. He has a very solid left jab, which he can use to back up the smaller Reveco,” Tolentino said.

“Reveco is very vulnerable when forced to back up and Nietes can launch his offense from there.”

Meanwhile, fight analyst Dennis Principe said Nietes needs to be impressive to prove he’s a worthy matchup against any of the main protagonists of the Super Fly card.

The main event will feature Srisaket Sor Rungvisai's WBC super flyweight title defense against former champion Juan Francisco Estrada.

“He will be there not only to size up his opponents but at the same time be in the same equation na pag-uusapan siya if ever he scores a spectacular victory. Chance niya na ma-mention as a potential opponent ng mga victors sa Super Fly series,” Principe said.

“So it's imperative for Donnie to score a convincing win. He needs to make this as his most impressive victory para makuha niya at least one of his dream fights sa card na ito.”

Nietes has a record of 40-1-4.
