MANILA - Militants set fire to an effigy of US President Donald Trump following a tension-filled clash with anti-riot police during Monday's anti-US, anti-Trump rally here.

The 13-foot effigy called the "Fascist Spinner" shows Trump with 4 spinning arms that form a swastika sign, holding a bag of cash, a nuclear missile, a gun, and a backhoe's loader bucket.

The 4 arms of the "Fascist Spinner" symbolizes "fascism, war, and plunder," Renato Reyes of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan said in a Facebook post.

Before this, thousands of protesters marched on the streets of Manila and attempted to go near the Philippine International Convention Center where the 31st ASEAN Summit kicked off.

However, anti-riot police blocked them on the corner of Padre Faura and Taft Avenue. Tension erupted as protesters tried to breach the police line.

Authorities fired water cannon at the militants while the protesters threw slippers, bottles, wooden blocks at the cops. At least 16 people were wounded during the clash.

The rally was mounted as world leaders, including Trump, meet for the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. This is also the 50th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN.

Trump arrived in the Philippines last Sunday, the last stop of his Asian tour. The US president earlier offered to mediate between claimants to the South China Sea.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano thanked Trump but said the Philippines has to consult first with other Southeast Asian nation regarding his offer.
