Typhoon Karen has left the Philippine area of responsibility but not before leaving more than half a billion pesos in damage in the agricultural industry in two regions, disaster officials said Monday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Karen caused about P572,842,513.41 worth of damage in the agricultural industry in the Bicol and Cordillera regions as of Monday morning. The typhoon mostly affected rice, corn, high-value crops, and livestock, the NDRRMC said.

The NDRRMC is also awaiting verification from the health and interior and local government departments regarding the causes of death of the three reported casualties in Camarines Sur and Catanduanes, if they are indeed related to the typhoon.

A total of 5,077 families are still seeking shelter in 524 evacuation centers in Regions 1, 2, 3 Calabarzon, Cordillera region, and Bicol region. Around 140 passengers remain stranded in seaports as well.

They also cited data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) that 905 houses have been partially damaged, while another 38 have been totally damaged in Regions 1, 2, Bicol region, and Cordillera region.

NDRRMC said no area had been reported to be totally isolated, but communication lines are yet to be fully restored in some areas. High-frequency radio is being used in the meantime.

There are also electricity interruptions reported in areas in Pangasinan, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Cabanatuan City, Batangas, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Benguet, Abra, Apayao, Ifugao, Kalinga, entire Catanduanes, and areas in Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte.

Restoration of water supply is also ongoing in several barangays in Pamplona, Camarines Sur.

The NDRRMC said the red alert will remain hoisted in its central office and in the municipal and regional offices affected by the typhoon.

Local government units are continuing relief operations using their pre-positioned supplies, but NDRRMC said they are hoping to replenish them soon.

With the skies a little clearer, NDRRMC said they have sent out their Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis team to put together a more comprehensive report on the impact caused by the typhoon.

They are also expected to conduct a pre-disaster risk assessment meeting Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning regarding the impending entry of 'Lawin' into the Philippine area of responsibility.
