MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte defended on Sunday House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez following the latter's admission of having a girlfriend.

Duterte, who was in Cagayan de Oro to visit wounded soldiers, hinted on extramarital affairs of public officials.

"We're all hypocrites pati si Speaker, lahat kami dito wala nang ranggo kapag ganun. Sino bang walang kaligayahan?" he told reporters.

"Tanungin natin ilan ang lawmakers na may 2,3, 4 na babae, tanungin mo sila. Tanungin mo ang lawmakers, ilan ang lalaki sa buhay nila?" he said.

Alvarez was threatened with being delisted from the roll of attorneys after he admitted that he has a girlfriend. He also admitted in a DZMM interview that he has "many" children out of wedlock.

The Speaker's personal life was made public after he filed a complaint at the Ombudsman against Davao del Norte 2nd District Representative Antonio Floirendo, Jr. for graft over the government's allegedly anomalous lease of land to a firm "wholly owned" by the Floirendo family.

The falling-out between the two lawmakers was rumored to have started from a spat between their girlfriends but Alvarez denied filing the charges because of this.

Asked to comment on the feud, the President simply said in jest: "Hindi babae ang pinag-awayan nila -- lalaki."
