Duterte snubs Trillanes' challenge to show up at BPI branch

MANILA - Vice-presidential candidate and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on Thursday vowed to impeach Rodrigo Duterte right away if the Davao City mayor wins in the May 9 presidential elections.

Trillanes also challenged Duterte to meet him Monday morning at the Bank of the Philippine Island (BPI) branch on Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig City where the mayor has a bank account, as Duterte has admitted.

Trillanes showed ABS-CBN News an envelope containing an alleged list of billions of pesos in bank accounts and assets that Duterte and his children reportedly have, but were not allegedly disclosed in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) as required by law.

The senator, citing data from his "network of informants," has alleged that Duterte has a joint account with his daughter, Sara, at the Julia Vargas branch of BPI which supposedly contains P211 million.

The amount was not declared in Duterte's SALN in 2014, where the mayor reported a net worth of only P21 million.

Trillanes said he will continue his crusade even if Duterte wins the presidency by having him impeached right away.

He said the country will be in a mess if Duterte wins.

Trillanes also described the mayor as a "liar."

He also showed a certification coming from Banco de Oro denying that a P500-million check was issued to Trillanes.

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has also denied giving such an amount to Trillanes.

''This is nothing more than a fabrication and a blatant disinformation. SMC does not have an account in the said bank branch and has never issued such check to Sen. Trillanes,'' SMC said in a statement.

DUTERTE TURNS DOWN CHALLENGE

Duterte, meanwhile, said he will not accept Trillanes' challenge of meeting face-to-face in the BPI Julia Vargas Avenue branch on Monday.

He said he will be busy campaigning that day.

Duterte also admitted on Thursday that he has an account in the said BPI branch, just hours after his spokesperson denied its existence.

Duterte, however, insisted that the account does not contain P211 million. Speaking to reporters in Bataan, Duterte said he has two bank accounts which contain only P50,000 and P17,000 each.
