MANILA - There was a heavy downpour Friday evening, the final night that friends and loved ones were with Kian Loyd Delos Santos, a teenager killed in an anti-drug operation in Caloocan City last week.

Despite the rains, classmates and schoolmates, close friends and acquaintances, relatives from other places squeezed their way into a narrow alleyway to see the 17-year-old for one final time.

"Blessing 'yan, para bukas wala nang ulan," said Kian's mother Lorenza Delos Santos, who had to push out rain water that filled a portion of a makeshift roofing in front of their small house in Barangay 160 as people came for the final night of the wake.

The 43-year-old OFW was busy all day accommodating visitors, making sure the food is enough and, once in a while, looking tearfully at her dead son.

"Pasensiya na kayo, at medyo masikip talaga dito sa 'min," said the teen's dad, Saldy Delos Santos, as he tried to make some of his son's schoolmates comfortable.

Accommodating all the condoling visitors were a good distraction for the Delos Santos couple as they tried to stay strong amid the horror of seeing their own child in a casket.

Majority of the visitors were teenagers in school uniform, ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade, all in agreement that what has been said by the police tagged in the killing- that Kian was a drug runner- was all far from the truth.

THE CLASS CLOWN

After class, Kian's high school friends at Gen. T. de Leon visited the wake. She remembered the teen as a class clown who would do anything to get a bored class going.

"Sa room nila, 'pag bored na 'yung klase, bigla na lang magre-recite si Kian, tas 'yung sagot niya malayo sa topic mapatawa lang 'yung klase, para magkabuhay," said Pau (not her real name).

"Kaso ngayon wala na e," said Charm (not her real name) another high school friend, who claimed to be Kian's special someone in the past.

Meanwhile, Kian's 12th grade classmate at the Our Lady of Lourdes in Valenzuela had a good laugh while recalling one funny moment she had with her friend.

"Ang yabang pa niya sa classroom, may tatô daw siya. Pagtingin ko Jollibee, 'yung nakabolpen," said Trina (not her real name), who learned about Kian's death through their Facebook group chat box.

Trina also remembered how her good-natured, humor-loving friend would say "heavy traffic along Tullahan River" as his go-to joke excuse whenever he was late for school.

She said her friend often rode a passenger raft to cross Tullahan River to go to school, as going via the highway would be farther. This was the reason, he said, why Kian wanted a bicycle.

"Ito po kasing dalawa may bike na, siya na lang wala pa," she said pointing to two of Kian's friends who ride their own bikes to school, an easy way to avoid the heavy highway traffic.

"Wala na kayong joker," Kian's dad told his son's friends and classmates during the wake.

KIAN'S LAST WISH

Lorenza, an overseas worker for three years, had vowed to send Kian a bike. The teen, who wanted to be a police officer, in turn promised his mom to pass his exams.

She was able to fulfill the promise but not before her son was killed by cops. The bike was brought to their home on the last night of Kian's wake.

"Pinilit naming bilihin. Idi-display na lang," said Saldy.

A close neighbor said Kian could have used that bike to bring his little sister to school, something the 12th grader always did every morning.

"Bago 'yan pumasok sa school, kakain muna. Akala mo pagkakain, maliligo na, tas aalis na? Hindi. Gigisingin si kapatid, 'yung bunso, 'mag-almusal ka na, maligo ka na, ihahatid kita," said JB.

"'Yan kasi ang promise niya sa mama niya, aalagaan niya 'yung bunso. Kahit lagi 'yang nag-aaway, 'yung away magkapatid na mamaya bati na. Pero kahit magkaaway ihahatid niya," he added.

A NEIGHBOR, FRIEND, AND BROTHER

JB, who has known Kian for years now, remembered the teenager as an all-around good guy in the neighborhood, who would always bring fun and humor to the people around him.

"Tambayan nila 'yang harap. Kami ng mama ko, tahimik kami rito. Minsan hindi mo maiiwasang marinig 'yung biro... Kami ng mama ko, matatawa kami sa biro niya. 'Yung biro na di nakakasakit pero nakakatawa," he shared.

JB also remembered Kian as a thoughtful neighbor who would always ask him if he needed anything before going to school.

"Routine na niya na pagpatak ng alas-10 o alas-8 ng umaga, nagpapabili ako ng kanin. Dadaan 'yan, 'Kuya JB, di ka papabili ng kanin? Papasok na ko.' Naka-polo na 'yan ha," he said.

"Napakabait na bata niyan dito. Hindi lang naman ako e. Kahit sino rito tanungin mo, 'yang kabilang bahay, 'yang tindahan sa kabila, 'yang computer shop dito. 'Yung 80 anyos nga dito, di niyan pinapaligtas, binibiro niya 'yan," he added.

There was even one time, JB recalled, when Kian's friend was hospitalized due to an accident. He said the teenager knew that watermelon was his friend's favorite, so he pawned his necklace and sold a shirt to be able to buy one for his friend.

This is why JB could not believe the allegations of the police against Kian. He said he immediately ran home when he heard the news about his neighbor, friend, and in many ways, a little brother.

AN UNLIKELY FUNERAL

Kian's mother was right. The downpour overnight stopped as soon as Kian's body was being brought out of their house at around 8:40 a.m.

Hundreds of loved ones, wearing white "Justice for Kian" shirts, followed the school boy's funeral car- a truck bedecked with flowers where his casket was placed- to Sta. Quiteria Church.

Members of various groups joined the march calling for an end to killings under the administration's war on drugs.

Kian's death drew public outrage as witness statements and forensic and video evidence suggested that the boy was murdered.

People from the community waited on street corners to see the funeral procession. Most if them were parents of Kian's schoolmates.

"Kawawa naman. Napakabait pa naman niyan," they told one another.

Before proceeding to the church for the final Mass, the funeral car stopped by the Caloocan City Police Station 7 for a prayer. This was the station where the cops tagged in Kian's killing were assigned.

At the church, Saldy, Lorenza, and the rest of the Delos Santos family sat on the front row. They were trying to stay strong but couldn't help but burst into tears once in a while during the Mass.

"Hindi ito normal na paglilibing," said Caloocan Bishop Virgilio David in his homily, adding that it should be the child that buries the parents, not the other way around.

If there is someone who could truly tell the parents of Kian, "I know how you feel," the bishop said, it would be the Virgin Mary and God, whose innocent Son was also killed.

A FINAL GOODBYE

Before the final blessing, the Delos Santos family poured their emotions when they were allowed to bless Kian with holy water.

Saldy was also given the chance to thank those who expressed their condolences and those who helped the family as they dealt with their loss.

His eyes swollen after days of crying, Kian's father questioned why it had to be his child.

After the emotional speech, the family proceeded to La Loma Cemetery to bring Kian to his final resting place. Hundreds joined the motorcade, demanding a stop to killings under the drug war.

Kian's remains were buried on the second level of an 'apartment-type' tomb located on a narrow path inside the cemetery. He was the youngest to be buried in the row.

Friends, relatives, and supporters tried to squeeze their way into the alley just to get a glimpse of the casket, crowding the teen's family in the process.

After one quick final look, the family let go of Kian, putting flowers inside the tomb before it was sealed.

As the family left, Kian's friends went in front of the tomb to bid their final goodbye, eyes all welling up, sad and angry at the same time.

As soon as the tomb was sealed, rain started to fall. It was as if the skies just allowed Kian's burial to at least go well for the family, friends and loved ones.

FEAR, ANGER IN KIAN'S HOMETOWN

Family, friends and loved ones are now crying for justice as cops accuse Kian of being a drug runner for his dad and uncle.

His family on Friday filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ) murder and torture charges against cops tagged in Kian's killing.

The family hopes the case will move even after Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II himself described Kian's death to have been "blown out of proportion."

"What is the difference between a minor killed by a drug addict and a minor killed by the police?" Aguirre told a Senate hearing on Kian's slay.

During the probe, Senior Supt. Chito Bersaluna, relieved Caloocan City police chief, said drug suspect alias "Nono" told them about the teen's alleged drug involvement.

Asked how they were able to validate Nono's testimony, he said: "We also based some doon sa mga ano, sir, lumalabas na mga ano doon sa mga social media na meron ding nagsasabi."

Autopsy results indicate that Kian was already down on the ground when he was shot by police. He sustained gunshot wounds to the head.

The cops involved in the operation meanwhile insisted that Kian fired at them, forcing them to fire back. But a CCTV footage show two men dragging the teen before he was killed.

Asked if there is fear in the neighborhood after what happened to Kian, JB said: "Wala namang takot, pero nag-iingat lang. Walang takot. Pero galit lahat ng nandito sa nangyari."

Kian's teenage friends, meanwhile, said they were a little more fearful now after what happened to their friend. All of them refused to be named for their security.

Asked who they fear more, the drug addicts or the police, they said: "Parehas na po."

Others said they fear the police more than they do drug addicts.
