MANILA - Singer-composer Ogie Alcasid said he wants Spongecola vocalist Yael Yuzon to be the next president of the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM).

In a recent press conference for his upcoming concert, "Ayokong Tumanda," Alcasid praised Yuzon, saying that he knows the sentiments of people from the music industry.

"Alam mo 'yung gusto ko 'yung husband ni Karylle, si Yael, magaling yon. At saka nakakausap ko siya, maganda 'yung mga sinasabi niya. At saka siyempre ang hinaing ng mga banda mas alam nila 'yon," said Alcasid, who is the current OPM president.

("You know, I like Karylle's husband, Yael. I spoke to him and he knows the sentiments of bands and musicians.")

OPM, a non-stock, non-profit corporation, is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 7 members duly constituted through an election.

The OPM's mission "is to carry on the task of working for the Filipino Singers' advancement."

Alcasid said the OPM, which has over 300 members, will have their next election in December.

"Six years na ako, so panahon na [for a new president]. Alam mo yon, marami akong sinakripisyo diyan, so gusto kong magtrabaho din. Tanggap naman nila na gusto ko na mag-move on," he said.

("I've been president for six years, so I think it's time for a new president. You know, I've sacrificed a lot of things, and now I want to go back to work. They (board) have already accepted that I want to move on.")

"Happy ako sa tinakbo ng OPM. We had our problems, alam mo naman 'yan, ang unang challenge ay 'yung paghanap ng pondo. Awa ng Diyos, naka-survive kami at nakagawa ng proyekto. Nabigyan naman namin 'yung mga nangangailangan, like 'yung mga namatayan, kung may health or legal issues, natutugunan naman namin 'yon," he added.

("I'm happy with what the OPM has accomplished. We had our problems -- the first challenge was where to get funds. With God's mercy, we survived and we were able to do a number of projects. We were able to help those in need, like those who lost their loved ones, and those with health or legal issues. We were able to help them.")
