MANILA -- Given their more than two year relationship that seemed altar-bound, singer-actress Zsa Zsa Padilla and architect Conrad Onglao left many scratching their heads when the two decided to call off their engagement.

In his column on the Philippine Star published Thursday, entertainment editor Ricky Lo attempted to shed light on the split and learned that it may have been caused by Onglao's attitude towards celebrities and showbiz in general.

One of Lo's sources claimed that Padilla might have gotten "fed up" with Onglao's "hurtful" words aimed at those working at the entertainment industry. The source added that Padilla might have been surprised about Onglao's attitude given how "gentle" Dolphy was.

"Maybe she got fed up with Conrad’s attitude, especially towards showbiz people whom he looked down on. Masakit daw magsalita si Conrad. You know naman how sensitive Zsa Zsa is. Nasanay kay Dolphy who was very gentle," the source was quoted to have said.

According to Lo, Onglao did not know that Padilla was an actress when the two first met through veteran actress Sharon Cuneta. He also claimed that Onglao was uncomfortable with the attention of being in a relationship with a celebrity.

Another source of Lo said that it was Padilla who pulled the plug on the relationship and that her marriage was originally scheduled for June. "And then they moved it to December this year," the source said.

"And then the break-up. They were so in love. At least that was how they seemed to me so I'm sad for Zsa Zsa, I'm sad for Conrad. I really thought that they would end happily ever after together. I thought that he has found his ‘forever," the source added.

Padilla and Onglao's split was confirmed on Tuesday by her daughter, Karylle. The "It's Showtime" host has refused to reveal more details about the break-up, but had asked for prayers for her mother.

"Siyempre kapag may malungkot na balita naman talaga eh hindi ako plastik para sabihing 'di ako nalulungkot, totoo naman nalulungkot ako. I'm just thankful dahil ngayong araw na ito ay ang dami kong na-receive na support, messages, consoling para sa mama ko. So thank you," she said.

Cuneta, meanwhile, also expressed her sympathy for Padilla. The star was the one who introduced Padilla to Onglao in 2014.

"You have let her grieve. I am hurt for Zsa Zsa since she has been my friend for 20 more years, also Conrad who's also a friend. But you know they had a good relationship and Zsa Zsa is a decent woman," she said.

According to Lo, he tried to get the side of Onglao on the split but his friends said that the architect did not want to speak and was "feeling low and very sad."
