MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte is the "critical link" to unifying several factions in the new Bangsamoro territory, an expert said on Tuesday, a day before the second round of the plebiscite, this time in Lanao del Norte and several towns in North Cotabato.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is expected to lead the new Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) after the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) was ratified in a plebiscite last month in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and in Cotabato City.

One of the challenges the Philippines' largest armed group would have to hurdle is how to get the cooperation of leaders of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the chieftains of the Maranao and Tausug tribes, Prof. Macapado Muslim, former president of the Mindanao State University, told ANC's Early Edition.

"The critical link here is President Duterte himself [because he] is so influential, so popular among the Bangsamoro people," he said, citing the chief executive's good relations with MNLF leaders Nur Misuari, Yusoph Jikiri, and MILF's Al-Haj Murad Ebrahim.

"If he works very hard to unify the Bangsamoro, I think he can unify them to ensure efficient and effective implementation of the Bangsamoro," he said.
