BAUANG, LA UNION — Traffic enforcers here have found a way to cheer up locals stuck in traffic — they bust out energetic dance moves despite the sweltering heat.

A video of traffic enforcer Cesar Gapasin, a former barangay tanod in Barangay Dili, went viral after an officer from the Bauang police posted it on social media.

Gapasin, who has only been a traffic enforcer for a month, said he dances to make people happy.

“Gusto ko lang pong sumayaw, para masaya po ang mga tao,” he said.

He dances to the beat of music played by nearby establishments, and sometimes to the beat of honking cars.

His bosses were happy with Gapasin’s gimmick.

“Natutuwa po, natutuwa rin po sila. Nakakagaan ng loob,” said Juan Cabrales, head of the Bauang traffic enforcers.

(Everyone is amused. His dancing lightens things up.)

Gapasin isn't the first dancing traffic officer here; George Gutierrez has been doing that for 15 years, residents say.

Instead of dancing to ambient music, he listens to music through his headphones.

“Sumasayaw-sayaw po para ngumiti yung mga dumadaan. Para yung mga nakasimangot, mga naiinitan tulad namin, matuwa naman,” he said.

(I dance to bring a smile on the faces of passersby, the ones who are having a bad day and are annoyed by the heat.)
