Protesters gathered at UP Diliman in Quezon City for a "mañanita" to mark 122 years of Philippine independence and object to the controversial anti-terror bill expected to be signed into law by President Duterte.

Rain brought by tropical depression Butchoy and the threat of dispersal by the police did not dampen the activists' spirits who brought with them protest materials accented as party favors.

The party theme is a swipe at Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas, the Metro Manila police chief, who drew flak for allegedly ignoring physical distancing rules during his birthday party last month, which he described as a "mañanita."

The protesters scored the passing of the anti-terror bill in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, at a time, they say, when attention and resources should be devoted to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, including the millions who have been rendered unemployed.

The measure, once signed into law by President Duterte, will allow the government to wiretap suspects, arrest them without warrants and hold them without charges for up to 24 days, among other provisions.
