MANILA — A doctor reminded Filipinos to be mindful of their food intake during the holidays, to prevent health complications arising from the celebration of Christmas and New Year.

Dr. Don Robspierre Reyes, chairman of the Philippine Heart Association on CPR, in a televised interview said that even in Christmas parties, people should still make sure to eat in moderation, particularly avoiding eating too much sweet and salty food.

“So ako naman po, bilang isang doktor ay hindi ko naman po sasabihin na huwag na po tayong kumain. Ang Pasko eh once in a while, wala naman po talagang bawal ano po… but let me qualify ano – kailangan po talagang in moderation po,” Reyes said.

“So, I think kung tatanungin mo ako ano iyong mga iiwasan, dalawa lang po talaga ang pinakakalaban natin kapag Kapaskuhan eh – ito iyong tinatawag kong matamis at ito iyong maalat; iyong matataba siyempre always, medyo iwasan din po natin iyon. So, sobrang tamis at sobrang alat po, iyan po talaga ang ipinagbabawal natin sa Kapaskuhan.”

Reyes explains that eating too much salty or saucy food can lead to a significant rise in a person’s blood pressure which could lead to heart attack or stroke.

“Kunwari nag-buffet po tayo, kumain tayo ng maraming masarsa/maalat, ang blood pressure po natin ay puwede pong biglang mag-shoot-up iyan. Kapag nag-shoot-up po ang BP natin, kunwari naging 200 o 180 over mga 100, iyong sobrang taas po, puwede itong magdulot iyan ng heart attack o kaya ng stroke o kung anuman pang emergency na maaaring maapektuhan ang puso at ang ating mga ugat sa katawan,” the doctor said.

“So, during festivities like this or seasons like this po, isa po talaga sa warning ko po sa lahat ng pasyente ko ay iwasan po iyong maalat. Iyong matamis naman po, lalo na sa mga diabetic… mayroon po tayong tinatawag na diabetic ketoacidosis – kapag sobrang taas naman iyong asukal sa ating katawan, maaaring magdulot ito ng emergency na maaaring ikamatay ng isang diabetic.”

Reyes also said that it is important to balance one’s portions with a healthy serving of high fiber food like vegetables and fruits.

The doctor also said that it is a wrong notion to think that one can eat in excess during the Christmas and then plan to burn the calories afterwards through exercise.

“It’s not nice na isipin natin “Okay, kain ka lang nang kain basta ma-burn mo,” remember na mayroon po tayong mga kinakain na kapag na-store po sa katawan natin wala na pong ano iyan, kumbaga nandoon na siya forever,” he said.

“So, ang nabi-burn lang po kasi ng ating pag-e-exercise ay iyong mga extra sugar, extra calorie pero kapag ang kinain po natin talaga ay kumapit na sa ating ugat tulad ng cholesterol ‘no po – kahit ano pong exercise po natin ay hindi na po matatanggal iyon. So, it’s not safe to assume or to think na “Nag-e-exercise naman ako, so puwede akong kumain ng kahit ilang lechon o kahit ilang hamon, o kahit ilang barbecue.” So, sinasabi pa rin natin iyan, eat in moderation pa rin po.”
