Photo by Ricky Bautista, ABS-CBN NewsMANILA – Earlier this year, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) retired the moniker Azkals, which was used by the Philippine men's national football team.

But now, it will be revived as a team representing the nation will adopt the nickname for their participation in the Asia 7's Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from October 9 to 12.

Former national team members Stephan Schrock and Misagh Bahadoran will be headlining the said pack, who also seek to continue the Azkals' legacy.

"This is the next step in keeping alive the Azkals name which has become synonymous with Philippine football," Schrock asserted.

"It is very important to continue the Azkals legacy on how as the former minnows of Asian football, we were able to rise and overcome the challenges before. Hopefully by using the moniker again, we can once more inspire all aspiring football players in the country," he also said.

Bahadoran added, "This is a tremendous opportunity for all of us to come together again and create a lasting legacy."

The Asia 7's, established in 2022, has quickly become the premier 7-a-side football tournament in Asia.

At least eight teams, including Malaysia, India, Japan, China, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, have already confirmed their participation, with five more teams expected to join.

As part of their preparations, the Azkals are actively seeking additional players.

Coach Hamed Hajimedhedi announced that tryouts will be held on September 7 and 8, 2024. A tune-up match against celebrity football players is also scheduled for October 6, with the final team roster expected to be announced before the exhibition game.
