(UPDATED) Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio silenced the home crowd at the North Paris Arena on Friday (early Saturday in Manila) with a sensational performance against France's Amina Zidani in the round-of-16 of the women's 57kg weight class.

Petecio overcame a slow start, thoroughly dominated the second, and did enough in the third round to win in four of the five judges' scorecards and advance to the quarterfinals in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

It was a painful loss for Zidani, the third seed in the division, who was cheered on by the home fans throughout the three-round bout. The 30-year-old French woman had received a bye in the round-of-32 but found her Olympic journey ended early by Petecio.

A silver medalist in the Tokyo Olympics, Petecio slowed down in the first round after a quickfire start that saw her back Zidani into a corner in the opening seconds. With both fighters appearing tentative, three judges gave the first round to the French bet.

Petecio came out swinging in the second round and overwhelmed Zidani, repeatedly finding a target for her left hook. The Filipina won the round convincingly, putting together great combinations that clearly stung her opponent.

But she appeared somewhat gassed in the third round, and Zidani was able to land some punches and keep her distance. Petecio did more than enough to win, however, still finding a home for her left straight as the match neared its end.

Four judges scored the bout in Petecio's favor (30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28) while another judge had it 29-28 for Zidani.

Petecio is now just one win away from a guaranteed medal in the Paris Olympics. She will return to action on Sunday evening, against China's Xu Zichun, who won via split decision against Colombian sixth seed Valeria Arboleda Mendoza.

Petecio progressed to the round-of-16 after a masterful performance against the taller, younger Jaismine Lamboria last Tuesday night. The veteran put on a skillful display against her opponent, dodging most of her attacks en route to a unanimous decision win.
