MANILA -- The Philippines' campaigns in the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games will be tough to follow, the chief of the country's Olympic committee said.

Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the Philippines' first-ever Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021, and gymnast Carlos Yulo rewrote history when he won two golds in Paris 2024.

"That's why work for Los Angeles in 2028 starts now," Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino said on Thursday.

Tolentino believes that gymnastics, weightlifting, and boxing are potential sources of medals for the Philippines in the Summer Games, though other sports can also be given elite treatment.

"The template applied in weightlifting, gymnastics and boxing has been tested and proven again in Paris," said Tolentino on the formula for success in sports -- a squad of coaches, strength and conditioning experts, physiotherapists, nutritionists, among others.

"The POC will be encouraging national sports associations to apply a similar template," he added.

There are 32 sports being played in the Paris Olympics that will be retained in the LA 2028 program, and Tolentino is confident that there are more than a dozen of them where Filipino athletes can win medals.

"Shooting, archery, and taekwondo, to name a few," said Tolentino, who is also confident that cycling -- the federation that he heads -- can also contribute to the medal haul.

An International Cycling Union-standard 250-meter indoor velodrome is expected to be completed in mid-2025 in Tagaytay City, where Tolentino is mayor.

"Twelve gold medals, six men and six women, are staked in track cycling here in Paris, that’s a lot of opportunities," said Tolentino.

For now, however, the focus is on celebrating the achievements of the Philippine Olympians in the Paris Games.

They will be welcomed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Malacañan Palace on Tuesday for a program, where they will be handed their incentives.

Team Philippines, led by Yulo, will arrive at the Villamor Airbase in Pasay City. They will parade through the streets of Manila before heading to Malacañan. -- with Cignal TV/POC Media
