Filipina golfers Bianca Pagdanganan and Dottie Ardina gave a good account of themselves in the women's individual stroke play in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Pagdanganan was one stroke away from a bronze medal, with her 6-under par total of 282 good for joint fourth along with Australia's Hannah Green, Korea's Amy Yang, and Japan's Miyu Yamashita.

They were on track for a playoff for bronze until China's Janet Lin birdied in the 18th hole to seize the solo third and dash the Filipina's medal hopes.

Esther Henseleit of Germany took silver with an 8-under total of 280, while Lydia Ko of New Zealand sealed her place in history by winning the gold medal with a 10-under 278.

Ardina, meanwhile, finished 3-under with a total of 285, tied with Albane Valenzuela of Switzerland, Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa, Brooke Henderson of Canada, and Spain's Azahara Munoz.

For Ko, the victory gives her more Olympic medals than any other golfer in history. 

Ko was runner-up behind Park In-bee when golf returned to the Olympics from a 112-year absence in Rio in 2016, before finishing third in Tokyo three years ago.

World number 54 Henseleit had been nine shots off the lead at the halfway stage of the event and seven back going into Saturday.

Her silver medal continues a breakthrough season which has seen the 25-year-old post top-15 finishes at three major championships to climb the rankings.

Lin outshone her more fancied compatriot Yin Ruoning with a three-under 69 to become the second Chinese golf medallist after Shanshan Feng also won bronze in 2016. 

Pagdanganan and Ardina completed the Philippines' campaign in the Paris Olympics, with the country finishing with two golds courtesy of Carlos Yulo, and two bronzes from boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio. -- with Agence France-Presse
