MANILA – Alas Pilipinas turned to an unusual hero against Kazakhstan as our hometown stars struggled to score in the semifinal round of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup.

On May 28 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, it was Arah Panique's time to claim a share of the spotlight when she put up 14 points to lead Alas' offense, only to put to waste as our volleyball heroes absorbed a 23-25, 21-25, 14-25 straight sets defeat from the Kazakhs, settling for a bronze medal match appearance as the tourney's curtains fall on Wednesday.

Panique was barely used in the preliminaries when the home crowd saw Alas dominate Australia, India, Iran, and Chinese Taipei starting Thursday last week.

The 5-foot-11 spiker did not even see action when the likes of Sisi Rondina, Eya Laure, and Fifi Sharma were rested against Chinese Taipei on May 26 as second-stringers got their time to shine for the host country.

But it was all heart for the National University standout, who proved that she belongs to the national team.

"Siguro po pinakita ko lang po kung ano 'yung kaya ko and tiwala po sa sarili na sinasabi lagi ng mga ates na magtiwala lang palagi sa sarili and sa ibang kasama po, especially kay Ate Jia [de Guzman]. Nagbigay talaga siya ng tiwala and sa mga coaches na nagtitiwala din po sa 'kin na ipasok po ako and always ready lang 'yung sarili," said Panique, who also spoke highly of team captain Jia de Guzman.

It can be remembered that the opposite spiker was a last-minute replacement for University of the East's Casiey Dongallo, who got injured before having a chance to don the national colors.

But like everybody else, Panique is always ready when she gets called up.

"Kailangan ko ibigay 'yung kaya kong gawin and siyempre, pinagkatiwalaan po ako so ipapakita ko lang talaga yung makakaya ko," she went on.

Panique led a 12-2 run in the opening canto, scoring six of it to help Alas climb from a 21-10 separation built by the Kazakhs.

It became a 22-23 count for the Filipinas after the blitz, but eventually, the visitors sealed the first set and later on the match to clinch the last finals berth of the AVC Challenge Cup.

Moving forward, the Alas women are now focused on winning the bronze medal, Panique included.

"Siguro po, itong game po 'yung panghuhugutan ngayon na maging inspirasyon namin na bumawi kami sa second game po," said Panique.
