MANILA – Alas Pilipinas captain Jia de Guzman is still proud of her team's performance in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup despite falling to Kazakhstan in the semifinal round.

The De Guzman-led crew could not defend home turf as they succumbed to the Kazakhs in straight sets, 23-25, 21-25, 14-25, on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Filipinas had a perfect 4-0 record in the tourney before losing to the Kazakhs.

De Guzman said she could feel Alas members' grit and drive to come back; true enough, they tore down a 21-10 Kazakhstan cushion in Set 1 and made it a 22-23 count.

However, our hometown heroes still could not handle the taller visitors as they averted collapse at the Filipinas' expense to enter the Finals.

"Sobrang proud ko talaga sa team. Wala akong ibang words for it kasi ramdam ko na lumalaban kahit dehado kami, kahit naghahabol kami, kahit mabilis kaming napupuntusan ng Kazakhstan, feel ko pa rin na gustong-gusto lumaban ng bawat isa sa amin whether inside the court or sa bench namin," the Denso Airybees standout said.

All's not lost for the Philippine squad as they take on Australia in the battle for bronze on Wednesday at the same Manila stadium.

"Bukas, kailangang mas higitan pa namin," De Guzman added.

For the star tosser, Alas Pilipinas should keep on pushing, win or lose.

"Just keep playing. Just keep playing. Kahit anong mangyari, just keep playing. Manalo, matalo, may matutunan ka sa laro, may matututunan ka sa kalaban mo," she said.

"Kazakhstan was in our level before, they just kept playing. Vietnam was in our level before, they just kept playing. So kami, ‘yun din ‘yung gagawin namin. Inaasahan namin na tuloy-tuloy pa rin ‘yung suporta para makalaro lang kami nang dire-diretso at maka-improve pa kami as a team," she went on.
