MANILA – One woman's loss is another woman's gain.

This was what happened during the 2024 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup, where Philippines' first and only Olympic gold Hidilyn Diaz was beaten by compatriot Elreen Ando in the 59kg weight division in Phuket, Thailand last week.

Ando, only 25 years old, has booked her second ticket to the Olympics after lifting a total of 228kg, while Diaz is set to miss her fifth consecutive Summer Games.

Asked what advice Diaz gave her, Ando said the Tokyo Olympics champion didn't forget to give everyone good luck and encouragement as they prepare for the Olympics.

"'Yun lang po, 'Galingan niyo sa Paris,'" Ando relayed to reporters.

Only one athlete per country is eligible for the Olympics in a weight class. With Diaz's former weight class 55kg now scrapped, where she won an Olympic gold medal three years ago, she ascended to the 59kg division. However, things didn't go as planned for Diaz after lifting only 222kg.

They also talked after the event, Ando said, where Diaz gave her best regards.

"Opo sir 'yung after ng laro namin po. Nag-usap po kami na 'yun po nag-thank you po ako sa kaniya tsaka nag-good luck po siya sa 'kin," she said.

Ando is also elated to see fellow Pinoys Vanessa Sarno and John Ceniza book their slots in the Paris Games.

"Congrats po sa kanilang dalawa po, we did it po. Olympian po sila. Idol ko din 'to 'yung dalawang 'to eh [John Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno]. Ito 'yung partner ko sa training po," Ando said as she expressed fondness for the two.

Asked what is her target now, Ando said she wants a podium finish in the Olympics.

"Any colors of medal po sir," she said.
