MANILA, Philippines — Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott made a surprise appearance at the Arena in San Juan on Wednesday to watch the PBA game between the Meralco Bolts and the Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Scott is in Manila for the first time along with his Filipina girlfriend, Cecilia Gutierrez. They were invited by local coaches to take in the local hoops scene. Scott sat beside Meralco team governor and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio at courtside as Meralco lost to Phoenix, 94-90.

"It was a good game," he said of the contest.

"I enjoyed it, I thought it was interesting. I thought both teams were competitive, and I saw some young talent who were pretty good.

"If they keep developing, keep playing, make sure they stay humble, they got a chance to be very successful."

Scott also plans to watch the league's Christmas Day games, which is highlighted by the "Manila Clasico" between Ginebra and Star at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan. He will leave the day after Christmas.

Scott was the coach of the Lakers for two seasons, compiling a 38-126 record. He was fired by the franchise in the offseason and replaced by Luke Walton.
