MANILA, Philippines — Jeric Teng showed promise in his debut for the Mahindra Floodbuster and the former University of Santo Tomas star vowed to continue improving as he tries to help the struggling team.

Teng spent the first three years of his PBA career with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters but struggled to get regular minutes under coach Yeng Guiao, averaging only 3.1 points in 83 games. He was not signed to an extension in the offseason, but soon found his way to Mahindra.

He played his first game for the Floodbuster on Sunday, a 94-91 loss to San Miguel Beer, scoring three points in an eight-minute stint.

"Jeric showed a lot in these past few days, what he's capable of," said Mahindra coach Chris Gavina, who said the team signed Teng in part to make up for the absence of injured gunner Gary David.

"He showed (Sunday) that he's capable of being a great defender, and once he gets his game legs going and his rhythm shots going, I think he'll be fine."

Teng said he is simply happy to have the opportunity to play in the PBA after struggling to make an impact in Rain or Shine.

"Mga four days pa lang (ako), and I'm still trying to know the system of coach and s'yempre 'yung mga teammates ko rin," he said. "Siguro, sa practice makukuha naman.

"Sana sa practice, maka-gel pa ako sa team, hopefully do better in the following games, and get more minutes at the same time."

Teng prides himself on having an "always ready" mentality, which served him well in his first game for Mahindra as he was sent in during crunch time to play defend.

" 'Yun nga, pinasok ako (noong huli), pero ayun nga, I always stay ready," he said. "Ready na ako noon, kaya ginamit ako."
