MANILA, Philippines — It's not called a "Dream Finals" for nothing.

The most popular rivalry in Philippine sports takes center stage over the next week or two when the Ateneo Blue Eagles clash with the De La Salle Green Archers for the UAAP men's basketball championship.

The last time these two teams met in the finals, Ateneo swept La Salle 2-0 to win the 2008 title.

Since the Final Four format was instituted in 1994, the Blue Eagles and Green Archers have met thrice in the finals, with Ateneo owning a 2-1 advantage.

La Salle won the matchup in 2001, before Ateneo avenged the loss the following year. Both best-of-three series went the distance.

The archrivals split their two meetings this year.

La Salle demolished Ateneo 97-81 on Oct. 2.

A month later on Nov. 5, the Blue Eagles exacted revenge with an 83-71 drubbing, subsequently ending the Green Archers' 12-game winning streak and their ambitions of sweeping the preliminary round.

Both teams will be led by first-time UAAP coaches. Ateneo's Tab Baldwin was the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas before joining the Eagles' staff, while La Salle's Alden Ayo guided the Letran Knights to last year's NCAA title before moving to Taft.
