MANILA, Philippines — Alaska Aces rookie Carl Bryan Cruz took advantage of an opportunity to show he belongs in the big leagues. Too bad his brilliance came in a loss.

Alaska lost to NLEX 99-97 on Friday, but Cruz managed to leave a good impression.

The Gilas Cadet led the Aces in scoring with 20 points to go with 14 rebounds and two steals in his PBA debut.

The rookie wasn’t expecting to get extended minutes but was granted so in the absence of “the Beast” Calvin Abueva.

“Actually I wasn’t expecting to get any minutes because I’m just a rookie,” Cruz said in the PBA website. “But I’m always prepared if coach calls my number.”

Cruz wasn’t really a star during his collegiate years with Far Eastern University where he averaged four points and three rebounds.

If his PBA debut were any indication, it looks like he's ready to break out in the pros.
