Coach Ariel Vanguardia wants to take advantage of the Phoenix Fuel Masters' speed and has decided to embrace a "small ball" strategy this coming PBA season.

The strategy, which sacrifices height and low-post offense-defense in favor of a smaller lineup with speed, has become popular thanks to the success of NBA teams like the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I think it’s the trend right now,” said Vanguardia in the PBA website.

He said the team is adjusting with the new style of play, and is confident his players will be able to perfect it eventually.

“Medyo nangangapa pa si JC na siya yung four, but so far, I’m pleased naman,” said Vanguardia, who also plans to include the likes of Willy Wilson, Michael Miranda, Norbert Torres, and Doug Kramer into their new strategy.

“Still, we have to match-up sa rebounding ng other teams if we play small-ball,” added the coach.

Intal said he is working to adapt into the system.

“Sa practice, I play four. Mas malaki yung binabantayan ko but I’ll be ready naman,” he said. “I’m looking forward to contribute more sa power forward position.”

Intal is also excited with their acquisitions, mostly shooters who will fuel their run-and-gun game.

“Excited ako kasi nadagdagan ng shooters yung team,” he said.

“It’s a young team na kaya mag-prove ng something dito sa liga. I’m excited maglaro kasama ng rookies. We’re going to run this season, and we’ll be fine.”
