MANILA - Columbian Dyip has made no secret of its intent to select Lyceum star CJ Perez with the No. 1 pick in the upcoming PBA Rookie Draft in December.

Perez is considered a can't-miss prospect -- he can play both guard positions and is athletic enough to be a small forward in the PBA, and his energy and motor will be a blessing to any team. Columbian Dyip is certainly justified if they take him with the first pick in the draft.

However, San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez feels that his own star guard, Robert Bolick, has done enough to merit consideration as the top pick as well.

"No offense to CJ," Fernandez said Monday, after guiding San Beda to the NCAA Season 94 title. "I do love CJ, and I do believe in his game."

"But this guy," he said, referring to Bolick, "deserves the No. 1 pick."

Bolick was the engine that spurred San Beda in its 2-game sweep of Perez's Pirates in the Season 94 Finals. In Game 2, he only had 4 points, but dished out 12 assists and was a plus-15 for the game. The Red Lions won comfortably, 71-56.

Perez, of course, was no slouch. He had 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in 33 minutes of action.

Still, Fernandez believes that Bolick showed why he deserves to be the No. 1 pick.

"If the coaches just watch how he plays, he can play with a system, he can play without a system," he said of Bolick. "He is one of the best players who can play 1, 2, and 3. He can play defense, he can score."

"He can do everything," Fernandez stressed.

Fernandez -- himself a former PBA coach for NLEX -- made it clear that he was not only talking up Bolick because the heady guard played for him.

"I'm sure he will be a good added player to the teams that will draft in the first 3 picks," he said.

"And especially, I'm hoping that Columbian Dyip will change their mind, because (if) you got Robert, you got Bolick, he will be the best point guard coming in this draft and probably the future of the PBA," the coach predicted.

Fernandez pointed to Bolick's journey -- from being a little-used reserve in La Salle to a star in San Beda -- as proof that the guard can also shine in the PBA.

"He comes from being a bench-warmer in the other school, but he came into San Beda and brought so many things to San Beda, more championships," he said.

"So, he deserves to be (No. 1). I vote for him being No. 1."
