NU on the brink of first round sweep in UAAP girls' volleyball

MANILA, Philippines -- National University (NU) moved on the cusp of completing a six-match sweep in the girls’ division, while Angel Canino powered De La Salle-Zobel to solo second as action continued in the UAAP Season 81 high school volleyball tournament.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Mhicaela Belen had 11 points and five excellent receptions as the Bullpups downed Far Eastern University-Diliman, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, to improve to 5-0.

NU will try to complete a sweep on Friday, when they take on University of the East at the Blue Eagle Gym in the Ateneo campus.

Meanwhile, La Salle-Zobel’s Canino exploded for 32 points on 28 kills, three aces, and a block as the Junior Lady Spikers stunned University of Santo Tomas (UST), 23-25, 25-11, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11.

Alleiah Malaluan chipped in 19 points and 18 digs as De La Salle-Zobel improved to 4-1.

Janna Torres had 13 points, while libero Det Pepito collected 34 digs for the Junior Tigresses, who were coming off a loss to the Bullpups in a rematch of last season’s finals last weekend.

Kate Santiago had 14 points, including two service aces, as Adamson University made quick work of UP Integrated School, 25-15, 25-18, 25-15, to move in a tie with UST at 3-2.

The Baby Tamaraws, meanwhile, dropped at 2-3 in fifth spot.
