MANILA - Tabbed as the future of San Beda, rookie James Canlas showed off his potential on Thursday in helping the Red Lions overcome the Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament.

Canlas starred in San Beda’s 75-68 triumph over the Pirates in their second round meeting, outshining more established names such as reigning MVP CJ Perez and veteran teammates Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon.

The youngster finished with a career-high 18 points on top of six rebounds. He scored half of his points in a scintillating second quarter run wherein the Red Lions pulled away from the Pirates.

“At first I was a little bit nervous but once I got to the game I just played good thinking that the game will come to you,” said Canlas, a Fil-Canadian recruit. “As a rookie you have to prove something to everybody and not just be the guy who shows up and does nothing.”

Canlas admits to feeling some pressure from his coach’s words, but is determined to just keep working hard.
