WNBA All-Star Kristi Toliver has landed a pretty solid offseason job: assistant coach for player development of the Washington Wizards.

The Wizards announced Toliver's hiring on Tuesday as part of a staff revamping two days before they open the NBA season against the Miami Heat on Thursday.

"This is the opportunity of a lifetime," Toliver told reporters. "When it came about, I wanted to be involved in any capacity that I could."

Toliver, 31, just completed her 10th WNBA campaign and helped the Washington Mystics reach the WNBA Finals before losing to the Seattle Storm. The two-time All-Star has career averages of 12.3 points and 3.4 assists during her WNBA career.

She admits it is different being a coach, particularly since she is used to having the ball in her hands as a player.

"I'd much rather be playing, I know that," Toliver said. "But it's good to think the game in a different way and from a different point of view."

Washington coach Scott Brooks liked what he saw of Toliver when she was serving as a coach during scrimmages. The loss of two assistant coaches in the offseason helped open a spot for Toliver.

"She's a special talent," Brooks told reporters. "She's going to be moving through the ranks pretty quick."

The Wizards also officially named former NBA player Robert Pack and Ryan Richman as assistant coaches.
