The Wizards announced Toliver's hiring on Tuesday as part of a staff revamping two days before they open the NBA season against the Miami Heat on Thursday.

Toliver, 31, just completed her 10th WNBA campaign and helped the Washington Mystics reach the WNBA Finals before losing to the Seattle Storm. The two-time All-Star has career averages of 12.3 points and 3.4 assists during her WNBA career.

She admits it is different being a coach, particularly since she is used to having the ball in her hands as a player.

Washington coach Scott Brooks liked what he saw of Toliver when she was serving as a coach during scrimmages. The loss of two assistant coaches in the offseason helped open a spot for Toliver.
