EAC's Sidney Onwubere

MANILA, Philippines – Even though he was unable to lead the Generals to a breakthrough Final Four appearance, Sidney Onwubere can still exit Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) with his head held high.

The versatile forward wrapped up his NCAA career by helping EAC survive University of Perpetual Help, 83-81, on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. He contributed 15 points and nine boards, well below his usual numbers, but Onwubere was gratified to see everyone from his team step up in the victory.

"Masaya ako kasi halos lahat, nag-contribute," said Onwubere, who averaged 18.06 points, 12.38 rebounds, 2.88 assists, and 1.56 blocks per game in his final season. "Lahat, may ginawa."

The victory over the Altas put the Generals' Season 93 record at 7-11 – not enough to make it to the semifinals, but still a notch better than last year's 6-12 slate.

"At least, nalagpasan namin 'yung record namin last year," said Onwubere.

Indeed, the EAC fans came out to support their team in their final game, knowing that the Generals had put together one of their more successful campaigns in the league.

Onwubere took time to soak in the NCAA atmosphere in the final 10 seconds of the game, as his teammate Sean Neri was making a free throw that helped them ice the win.

"Mami-miss ko 'yung crowd, 'yung drums, 'yung fans na sumisigaw," said the pro-bound Onwubere. "'Yun 'yung pinakama-miss ko. Very grateful ako sa EAC community."

Never the flashiest of players, Onwubere nevertheless made an impact on games, thanks to sheer hard work and hustle. He steadily improved his skills as his career went on, and even became a dangerous three-point shooter in his final season.

Yet he never lost sight of how he was able to make a name and earn his minutes in the team.

"It's all about the hard work," said Onwubere, when asked what message he left for his younger teammates. "Lagi ko sinasabi sa kanila na mahahabol niyo 'yung mga nasa itaas pag mag hard work."
