MANILA—Carlos Yulo is heading home after clinching gold in the world artistic gymnastics championships in Germany.

The 19-year-old Filipino gymnast, together with his Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya and Gymnastics Association Of The Philippines president Cynthia Carreon, had a layover in Turkey before boarding a flight to Manila.

Yulo topped the floor exercise of the competition in Stuttgart Saturday, making him the first Filipino to occupy a podium spot at the championships.

He secured a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when he ranked high enough in the men's individual all-around competition.
